About Elizabeth Arden

Anyone who has ever shopped for some of the best of the best when it comes to cosmetics knows the name Elizabeth Arden. Whether you shop full retail or stock up on deals and bargains at factory outlet stores, this is a brand you cannot miss. However not too many people know that much about the company or the woman behind one of the biggest names in cosmetics.

In fact, the woman behind the startup of Elizabeth Arden was given an entirely different name at birth. Florence Nightingale Graham is the real name of the savvy business woman responsible for this popular line of makeup. Hard to believe few people are even aware of the history of this company even though, at the peak of this woman’s career she was deemed one of the wealthiest women anywhere in the world.

Florence Nightingale or Elizabeth Arden?

While the original Florence Nightingale was known for her compassion and courage as a nurse, this Florence Nightingale became famous something else altogether. In fact, it may be why she chose to use another name for business completely, in order to avoid confusion. Born in Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada in 1884, Arden was the child of parents who had immigrated to the area from the United Kingdom.

Ironically, Ms. Arden did attend nursing school but dropped out. It was when she relocated to Manhattan and picked up work as a bookkeeper for a pharmaceutical company that she gained interest in skincare. Aside from developing products, this business woman also worked to do more than just market her products.

As part of her marketing campaigns and in her salons, Arden worked to help women understand how to apply makeup. She has been credited with developing the concept of the makeover as well as matching the eye shadow, lipstick and facial makeup. In fact Elizabeth Arden really helped to establish makeup as being seen as important for presenting oneself as more ladylike.

Prior to Arden’s campaign, facial color had only been viewed as something used by lower class women or prostitutes. However through her campaign she was able to change this view and even target middle age and plain women helping them to look younger and more beautiful through the use of correct makeup application. You could almost say that Ms. Arden didn’t just create the products, she created the market so that there was a desire for her products.

In the Beginning

It was in 1909 that Arden teamed up with another culturist, Elizabeth Hubbard. It was when the partnership broke apart that Arden coined the actual name “Elizabeth Arden.” Elizabeth came from her former partner’s first name. Arden was from a Tennyson poem, “Enorch Arden.” Her brother loaned her the startup amount of $6,000 and Elizabeth Arden had her first salon on 5th Avenue in 1910 called the Red Door salon.

Yet she still wasn’t done. Arden continued to revolutionize the cosmetics and business world. In 1912 she traveled to France where she learned beauty tips and even the use of facial massage that was being utilized in the beauty salons of Paris. Upon her return, Arden brought with her rouges and other powders she had designed as a result of her trip.

And in 1915 she actually went international opening salons across the globe. This was quite a feat for any business person back in 1915 but especially a woman. Her products remained popular until the time of her death in 1966 and still remain popular today.
