About Timberland

Timberland is not one of those brands anyone may have ever predicted would become “trendy.” The bottom line is that this was one line of footwear that was intended to be functional and still remains so. Usually, though, that is about all the average consumer knows about the Timberland brand.

Today Timberland sells footwear to men, women, and children across the globe all while maintaining a reputation for high quality, functional products. The fact that recent years made the look become a trend certainly didn’t hurt the brand. However, this company would remain a good seller based even on its durable boot collection that practically sets the industry standard.

Tracing Timberland Roots

The Timberland story really can be traced back to the 1950s. That was the era when Nathan Swartz acquired the Abington Shoe Company based out of Abington, Massachusetts, and also brought his sons into the company. By the 1960s the family owned business was already revolutionizing the industry.

It was during this period that the Swartz’s introduced the injection-molding technology. For anyone who isn’t familiar with this, it is quite literally what helped leave out the need for stitching. This technology fused together the sole with the leather upper with no stitching required. One thing this meant was that these shoes could truly become waterproof.

It wasn’t actually until the ’70s that the company brand name became Timberland and their first guaranteed waterproof boot became available. From there the company was well on its way to becoming the bestselling brand we know it as today.

The ’80s and Beyond

During the ’80s the Timberland company saw big changes. For one thing, the early part of this decade is when export began to really taking off, starting in Italy and moving globally; not to mention the company also finally went public on the American Stock Exchange. Sidney Swartz, one of Nathan’s sons, became the sole proprietor, and by the end of the decade the company’s involvement with community service and support had been well established and was making quite an impact.

Women’s footwear was finally introduced in the 1990s, and the company’s involvement with community service, including anti-racism campaigns and environmental organizations, grew. The product line also expanded, introducing ways to make the products more comfortable as well as durable. Youth shoes were introduced, and the line expanded to also include things like watches, daypacks, travel gear, and gloves, just to name a few.

Modern Era of Timberland

During the past decade or so, the company has truly become known for high grade, durable, and comfortable work boots and shoes. In fact, these designs have won the company awards. Additionally, Timberland has won many types of awards. Timberland has been named one of Fortune Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” numerous times as well as making the same magazine’s “Most Admired Companies” coming in at a respectable and impressive #5 on the list.

As the company grows, so does its efforts to be proactively involved with charitable acts of kindness and encourages and enables its employees to do the same. Over the past few years the awards have been non-stop for Timberland. From being green to being the best “adoption friendly” place to work according to various organizations and magazines, Timberland has proven to be a company motivated by much greater things than the  almighty dollar.

What You’ll Find

Timberland has certainly expanded over the years. Not only has their line of shoes and boots completely grown, but their products now go beyond just shoes and boots. One example of this was the company’s acquiring Smart Wool socks within the past decade. You can shop for Timberland online, at full retail stores, at department stores, and at outlets.

Getting the Best Deal Possible

When it comes to shopping for the Timberland brand name, the bottom line is that you’re getting a bargain. For the quality that comes with this respected brand, the value is certainly there even if you are paying full retail. However, for those who happen to like outlet shopping, there are some true deals to be found.

Although Timberland remains an outlet brand that is not quite as common to come by, lucky shoppers can track down locations. Some of the locations to look for when it comes to Timberland outlets include, but are not limited to, Tanger Outlets in:

  • Atlantic City, New Jersey
  • Sevierville, Tennessee
  • Barstow, California
  • Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
  • San Marcos, Texas

  • Plus a handful more

One thing is for sure and that’s whether you find your Timberland merchandise at a full retail store or steal a deal at an outlet location, you won’t be disappointed. The company has retained the commitment to durable and high quality products just like it first started with over 60 years ago. From here the brand only continues to evolve and offer the best of the best for customers around the world.
