About Saks Fifth Avenue

Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th is the discount or outlet store version of the original Saks Fifth Avenue store. So to know about Off 5th, you have to first know about the original store. To know about the history means to travel back in time and place to the early 1900s at New York’s 34th Street and Herald Square.

It was in this time and place that two independent store owners, Bernard Gimbel and Horace Saks, decided to unite in order to fulfill their dream and vision. This dream was to design a store that would become symbolic of high end fashion and living. They could not have possibly have realized how what they developed would not just come to fruition but also become iconic and legendary for high end fashion and living.

Originally the store could be traced back to the roots of a business Saks had founded as early as 1867. Saks & Company was incorporated in 1902. Merging with Gimbel Brothers, Inc. is what helped take this business to the next level.

And So It Begins

Saks and Gimbel’s dream became reality on September 15, 1924 with their store Saks Fifth Avenue. It was to become the first large retail store with a location within a residential district. However, this dream was posthumous for Saks, who passed away in 1912. It was in 1923 that Saks & Co. merged with Gimbel Brothers, Inc.

A year later the large retail location was launched. Other locations were to follow. Saks Fifth Avenue set out to offer its customers the best in fashions for men and women as well as offering the best in customer service.

By making this the focus of the retail brand, Saks Fifth Avenue was able to become synonymous with taste and elegance. To this day Saks Fifth Avenue is known as a location to shop for the finest things in life. Even when it comes to shopping at the brand’s factory outlet division, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, shoppers still get the same level of best of the best for fashion and related items.

To get an idea of what Saks Fifth Avenue is like, you can compare it to the other high end specialty stores Saks competes with in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Some of the famous competition includes brand names such as:

  • Lord & Taylor
  • Barney’s New York
  • Neiman Marcus
  • Berdorf Goodman
  • Bloomingdale’s

Distinctly Unique

One of the things that made and still does make Saks Fifth Avenue so unique is the variety of items and brands they carry. Not to mention some of the achievements the retailer has accomplished. Just a little research on the brand will show you some of the milestones for Saks Fifth Avenue include:

  • In the 1930s, Saks began selling ski equipment to meet the demands of customers.
  • This retailer also is responsible for launching the Estee Lauder line of cosmetics starting in the 1940s.
  • In 1969 it was the Saks Fifth Avenue brand that was responsible for decorating the White House Christmas tree.
  • In 2000 the retailer launched its online shopping experience to make it easier for customers to shop and to reach more customers all around the world.

Also, in 2007 the brand started a designer shoe salon called 10022-SHOE. This was the result of an experiment the postal service tried by selling businesses the plus zip code extension. Saks was the first business to take advantage of this.

These are just some of the accomplishments and milestones for the Saks Fifth Avenue name.

All About the Outlet

It was in 1992 that the first prototype for Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th opened. This was the brand’s expansion to offer the same quality of goods at off-price costs. Shoppers love Saks Fight Avenue Off 5th because they get designer clothing and accessories at more value priced costs.

When you shop at this full retail or outlet store, you are not shopping for one brand. Saks Fifth Avenue or Off 5th is similar to a department store in that it carries a wide variety of high end brands. However, unlike a department store the main focus is just men’s and women’s clothing and accessories.

Some of the designers or name brands shoppers can find at Saks Fifth Avenue or Off 5th include but are certainly not limited to:

  • AG Adriano Goldschmied
  • Donna Karan
  • BCBG MAXAXRIA
  • Free People
  • Cole Haan
  • Gucci
  • Missoni
  • Tory Burch
  • Diane Von Fustenberg
  • Plus so much more

Saks Fifth Avenue does have its own brand lines as well though. So when shopping Saks Fifth Avenue or Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th you can shop among the retailer’s own lines such as:

  • Saks Fifth Avenue Gray
  • Saks Fifth Avenue Red
  • Saks Fifth Avenue Blue
  • Saks Fifth Avenue Black
  • Saks Fifth Avenue Made in Italy
  • Saks Fifth Avenue
  • Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th
