About Lululemon

Chip Wilson spent 20 years involved in the surf, skate and snowboard business when he took his first yoga class. He loved it so much that he decided to continue, and felt that the clothing that was being worn in yoga classes was not the least bit appropriate. After all, sweat pants and similar items are too restrictive for exercise that involves a lot of stretching. He had a passion for fabrics for athletes, and opened his first yoga clothing design studio. To make ends meet, his design area was turned into a yoga studio at night, where the clothing was sold. This clothing became popular, and with the success of this line, Lululemon was born. This clothing became so successful because it was designed using the feedback from yoga instructors.

How Lululemon Got its Name

A survey of 100 people was taken to come up with the name Lululemon. The survey participants were given a list of 20 brand names and 20 logos. One name, “athletically hip” was refused, but the “A” used for the logo came from that name.

Before the Outlet Stores

Lululemon’s first store opened in 2000 in Vancouver, BC. The store was created to be a hub for the community where people could learn about the health benefits of yoga. While this was a great idea in theory, it was such a popular concept that sales clerks had difficulties selling their products because they were spending so much time helping customers in other areas. It was then that the staff members were trained so that they could help customers in a positive way. In the beginning, the aim was to have one store, but it was so popular that the company had to grow into what it is today.

It even has emergency hair ties so you can keep your hair pulled back and out of your eyes.
• Men’s Sequence Hoodie – Available in solids or stripes, this jacket is made from cotton fleece fabric that stretches and moves with you. It is designed for yoga, gym and everyday wear, and has three handy pockets for storing keys, money, etc.
• Men’s Trainer Pant – Unlike other sweats, these come with a zipper. They have a relaxed fit so you can be comfortable no matter what you are doing, and there is an adjustable drawstring so you can get a good fit at the waist. Easy-access hip pockets are great for holding keys, wallets, etc.
