About Finish Line
If you have ever purchased a pair of athletic shoes before, then you have more than likely been to the Finish Line. They carry all kinds of styles and at affordable prices. The Finish Line stores are located all throughout the United States and in malls and outlets everywhere.
The Finish Line was started back in 1976 by three childhood friends. The Finish Line was nothing more than a franchise of another popular shoe store at that time, The Athlete’s Foot. This all started in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana and eventually grew into something bigger.
The three childhood friends that started the Finish Line, Alan H. Cohen, David Klapper and John Domont, began with ten franchises in Indiana. By 1981 the three were ready to take off and grow their franchise beyond Indiana.
The three friends each played a different role in the business. Domont was considered the silent partner, while Klapper ran the business solely. As for Cohen, he was only considered part-time at first as he studied law.
As the three went on to expand, they encountered a major problem. The Athlete’s Foot rights ended at the edge of the Indiana border. The three could not take the franchise beyond the border, so they took control and started their own business and called it The Finish Line.
Once the company took off, the three had approached two more gentlemen to help with their expansion. Larry Sablosky and David Fagin were close friends of the three men. Sablosky was asked to be a partner with The Finish Line, while Fagin was asked the same. Fagin already knew the ins and outs of the operation as he was the manufacturer’s representative and had been selling quality products to the three already.
The first Finish Line was at the Speedway Shopping Center located inn Speedway, Indiana. By 1991, The Finish Line had grown to vast numbers. They had more than 100 stores located throughout the mid-western and southeastern states. Within the confines of these states, The Finish Line had grossed more than 100 million dollars annually. Then in 1992 the company went public.
